Japan October manufacturing PMI at highest in more than three years

Kontak Perkasa - Reuters (31/10) - Japanese manufacturing activity grew at the fastest pace in more than three years and factory output grew at the fastest pace in almost four years in October, a survey showed on Thursday, in a sign that domestic demand remains firm before a sales tax increase next April.

The Markit/JMMA Japan Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) rose to a seasonally adjusted 54.2 in October from 52.5 in September.

The index remained above the 50 threshold that separates contraction from expansion for the eighth consecutive month and reached the highest level since May 2010.

'The data signaled that the latest expansion was largely demand driven and apparently unimpeded by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's recent confirmation of a sales tax hike next April.'

The output component of the October PMI index also gained to 57.7 from 53.8 in September to show the fastest growth in almost four years.

The index for new export orders fell to 53.1 from the previous month's 53.3.

The government will raise the national sales tax to 8 percent in April from 5 percent to pay for rising welfare costs. This has fuelled a burst in spending before goods become more expensive.

An increase in capital expenditure plans by Japanese companies has also helped support output of heavy machinery and manufacturing equipment.

Gold eases despite Fed as investors take profits

Kontak Perkasa - Reuters, (31/10) -- Gold slipped on Thursday despite the U.S. Federal Reserve vowing to support the economy through stimulus measures, with investors taking profits from a recent run-up in prices.

The metal had risen about 8 percent since hitting a three-month low on Oct. 15 in anticipation of the Fed's move, leading to a price correction on Wednesday after a statement from the bank came in line with expectations.

Spot gold pared some losses after falling as much 0.3 percent to trade down 0.12 percent at $1,340.59 an ounce by 0022 GMT. Gold is heading for a 1-percent monthly gain.

The Fed on Wednesday sounded a bit less optimistic about economic growth as it announced plans to keep buying $85 billion in bonds per month. The central bank noted that the recovery in the housing market had lost some steam and suggested some frustration at how slowly the labour market was healing.

Elliott Management said the Fed's easy money policies have distorted the economy and created big risks for markets and investors alike, prompting the hedge fund firm to add to long gold options to protect against inflation.

Gold Holds Near Five-Week High Before Fed Begins Policy Meeting

Kontak Perkasa - Bloomberg, (29/10) -- Gold held near the highest level in five weeks after U.S. economic data backed the case for the Federal Reserve to maintain stimulus, with central bank policy makers set to begin a meeting today to weigh the recovery.

Bullion for immediate delivery traded at $1,353.86 an ounce at 8:43 a.m. in Singapore from $1,352.65 yesterday, when the price touched $1,361.93, the highest since Sept. 20. Holdings in the SPDR Gold Trust, the biggest bullion-backed exchange-traded product, held steady at 872.02 metric tons yesterday.

Gold advanced in October as U.S. lawmakers wrangled over the nation’s budget and debt ceiling, triggering a 16-day partial government shutdown that may have hurt growth. U.S. factory output trailed forecasts in September, while pending sales of previously owned homes fell the most in three years, separate reports showed yesterday.

“Trading is light as investors wait for what the Fed may say about quantitative easing and the timing of a reduction in stimulus,” said Wang Xiaoli, chief investment strategist at CITICS Futures Co., a unit of China’s biggest listed brokerage.

Gold lost 19 percent in 2013 after rallying for 12 years on expectations that the Fed will start to slow its $85 billion in monthly bond buying as the economy strengthens. Fed policy makers, who unexpectedly refrained from tapering at their September meeting, will delay cutting purchases until March, according to economists surveyed by Bloomberg on Oct. 17-18.

Gold for delivery in December was little changed at $1,353.40 on the Comex in New York, heading for the third monthly gain in four. The trading volume was 78 percent below the average for the past 100 days for this time of day, data compiled by Bloomberg showed.

WTI Oil Drops From One-Week High as Crude Supplies Seen Rising

Kontaka Perkasa - Bloomberg (29/10) -- West Texas Intermediate oil dropped from the highest level in a week before government data that is forecast to show crude stockpiles rose to a four-month high in the U.S., the world’s biggest consumer of the fuel.

Futures fell as much as 0.5 percent in New York, slipping for the first time in four days. U.S. crude inventories climbed for a sixth week, adding 2.7 million barrels in the period ended Oct. 25, according to a Bloomberg News survey before a report from the Energy Information Administration tomorrow. WTI’s discount to Brent oil widened yesterday after the European benchmark grade advanced as Libyan output was cut.

“Inventory builds in the U.S. are playing more of a part on what’s happening in the market,” said Jonathan Barratt, the chief executive officer of Barratt’s Bulletin in Sydney. “The WTI-Brent spread is starting to push out, and that’s got to do with Libya.”

WTI for December delivery slid as much as 46 cents to $98.22 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It was at $98.30 at 11:58 a.m. Sydney time. The contract rose 0.9 percent to $98.68 yesterday, the highest close since Oct. 21. The volume of all futures traded was about 70 percent below the 100-day average.

Brent for December settlement fell as much as 51 cents, or 0.5 percent, to $109.10 a barrel on the London-based ICE Futures Europe exchange. It closed $2.68, or 2.5 percent, higher at $109.61 yesterday. The European benchmark crude was at a $10.88 premium to WTI, down from $10.93 the previous day.

Dollar steadies vs rivals, China money rates, Fed in focus

Written By PT Kontak perkasa Futures Yogyakarta on Monday, October 28, 2013 | 10:12 AM

Kontak Perkasa - Reuters (28/10) - The dollar licked its wounds in early Asian trading on Monday, steadying against major counterparts ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy-setting meeting following a testing week which saw it tumble to two-year lows against the euro.

Economists and market participants widely expect Federal Open Market Committee members to hold steady on purchasing $85 billion of assets next month when they meet on Tuesday and Wednesday. Most expect the central bank to delay tapering its stimulus to at least March next year.

Investors will also keep a wary eye on Chinese short-term rates, after they surged last week to their highest level since the June credit crunch.
The euro was nearly flat at $1.3805, after rising as high as $1.3832 on Friday, its highest since November 2011, according to Reuters data.
The euro remained buoyant despite downbeat German Ifo business sentiment data on Friday, which unexpectedly showed a decline for the first time in six months.

Currency speculators reduced their dollar bets to the lowest level since February in the week ended October 1, according to data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission released on Friday.

Against a basket of currencies, the dollar was slightly higher at 79.216, but still not far from a near nine-month low of 78.998 touched on Friday.

The dollar added about 0.2 percent against the yen to 97.55 yen, edging away from a more than two-week low of 96.92 yen hit on Friday.

The dollar remained supported against the yen on the view that the yield differential between Japanese government bonds and U.S. Treasuries will persist, as the Fed eventually moves toward tapering its stimulus while the Bank of Japan maintains its ultra-easy stance.

The BOJ is widely expected to maintain its monetary policy stimulus at its meeting on Wednesday and Thursday, to meet its target of two percent inflation in two years.

The BOJ will also release its latest long-term economic forecasts on Thursday. Sources close to the central bank have told Reuters that it is expected to revise up economic growth for the fiscal year beginning in April 2014 to around 1.5 percent from the current 1.3 percent.

Indeks manufaktur CHina sentuh 7-bulan tertinggi: HSBC

Written By PT Kontak perkasa Futures Yogyakarta on Thursday, October 24, 2013 | 10:28 AM

Gold Trades Near Three-Week High as Fed May Maintain Bond Buying

Kontak Perkasa - Bloomberg, (23/10) -- Gold traded near the highest level in more than three weeks on speculation that the Federal Reserve may delay stimulus cuts until next year after U.S. payrolls gained less than projected.

Bullion for immediate delivery was at $1,340.10 an ounce at 7:57 a.m. in Singapore from $1,340.15. Prices touched $1,344.85 yesterday, the highest since Sept. 30. Gold for December delivery dropped 0.2 percent to $1,340 on the Comex.

Gold is set for the first annual drop since 2000 as some investors lost faith in the metal as a store of value and on expectation the Fed will slow its $85 billion monthly bond purchases as the economy improves. U.S. employers added 148,000 workers in September from a revised 193,000 gain in August, the Labor Department said yesterday. The median of forecasts by 93 economists in a Bloomberg survey was an increase of 180,000.

“As soon as we see data that suggests that things aren’t traveling well, it immediately puts investors’ thoughts back to quantitative easing,” said David Lennox, a resource analyst at Fat Prophets in Sydney. “The market is probably fairly comfortable with the fact that there’s not going to be a tapering of QE for the foreseeable future.”

Policy makers will delay cutting bond buying until March, according to the median estimate of 40 economists in an Oct. 17-18 Bloomberg survey. Gold rose 70 percent from December 2008 to June 2011 as the Fed pumped more than $2 trillion into the financial system to boost the economy.

Holdings in the SPDR Gold Trust, the biggest bullion-backed exchange-traded product, expanded 0.8 percent to 878.32 metric tons yesterday, the first increase since Sept. 19, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

The Aussie dollar rose to a four-month high after data released in Sydney showed that inflation quickened in the third quarter. Bullion for immediate delivery traded 0.1 percent lower at $1,314.70 an ounce by 8:36 a.m. in Singapore, after gaining 3.5 percent last week in the best showing in two months. Palladium, the only metal that has advanced this year, climbed as much as 0.4 percent to $752.35 an ounce, the highest since Aug. 27.

U.S. September jobs data will be released today after being postponed because of a 16-day partial government shutdown that started Oct. 1 as lawmakers clashed over passing a budget and lifting the nation’s borrowing limit. The fiscal strife in Washington will probably delay the central bank’s paring of its monthly asset purchases, Fed Bank of Chicago President Charles Evans, an advocate of monetary stimulus, said in a CNBC interview yesterday.

“Bullion edges lower in lackluster trading ahead of the U.S. nonfarm payrolls release,” Howard Wen, an analyst at HSBC Securities (USA) Inc., wrote in a note. “The data will likely hold implications to the near-term direction of bullion as a disappointing jobs report may boost gold prices while a better-than-expected report may be a drag on prices.”

Dow Jones industrial average turun 0.08% sebanyak 12.72 poin berada dilevel 15,386.93, index S&P 500 turun 0.01% sebanyak 0.22 poin dilevel 1,744.28, index Nasdaq Composite naik 0.24% sebanyak 9.43 poin dilevel 3,923.71.

Yen Weakens After Trade Data as Asian Stocks Gain; Copper Falls

Written By PT Kontak perkasa Futures Yogyakarta on Monday, October 21, 2013 | 10:20 AM

Kontak Perkasa - Bloomberg (20/10) -- The yen weakened against all of its major peers after Japan’s exports trailed estimates while Asian stocks climbed from a five-month high as investors weighed the timing of a reduction in Federal Reserve stimulus. Copper fell.

The yen declined 0.3 percent to 97.96 per dollar as of 11:06 a.m. in Tokyo, slipping against 16 major counterparts. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index gained 0.2 percent, on course for the highest close since May 21. Futures on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index added 0.1 percent after the gauge reached a record on Oct. 18. Australia’s dollar snapped an eight-day rally to drop 0.2 percent and copper futures in London lost 0.1 percent.

The Bank of Japan will continue pumping cash into the economy to spur inflation, Governor Haruhiko Kuroda said today, after government data showed exports in September increased less than economists forecast. The Fed won’t taper its monthly bond purchasing program until March next year because the U.S. government shutdown slowed fourth-quarter growth, according to a Bloomberg survey of economists conducted Oct. 17-18.

“The yen is probably leading the way as far as losses versus the dollar are concerned,” said Sacha Tihanyi, a senior currency strategist at Scotiabank in Hong Kong. “Equities are doing a bit better. We haven’t seen a turn in the trade balance, which is a little bit concerning.”

Dollar terperosok ditengah ekspektasi penundaan tapering

Harga naik 3,4 persen selama pekan lalu.

Sementara, emas berjangka AS naik tipis 0,2 persen menjadi $ 1,317.50 per ounce.

(rk )

WTI Crude Fluctuates Near Three-Month Low Before China Data

Kontak Perkasa - Bloomberg (18/10) -- West Texas Intermediate crude fluctuated near a three-month low before data from China that may show the economic recovery is keeping pace in the world’s second-biggest oil consumer.

Futures swung between gains and losses in New York and are poised for a second weekly decline. China will issue a raft of data today, with the world’s second-largest economy estimated to have expanded last quarter at the fastest pace this year, according to a Bloomberg survey. The nation will also report industrial production output for last month. The U.S. government will release crude stockpile figures on Oct. 21 that was delayed this week because of the partial government shutdown.

WTI may drop next week after data from the industry-funded American Petroleum Industry showed surging U.S. crude inventories, according to a Bloomberg News survey. Twenty-three of 38 analysts and traders, or 61 percent, forecast futures will decrease through Oct. 25. Ten respondents said there will be little change and five projected a gain.

The U.S., the world’s biggest crude consumer, will account for about 21 percent of global oil demand this year, the International Energy Agency estimates.

Japan Shares Climb to Three-Week High as U.S. Reaches Debt Deal

Kontak Perkasa - Bloomberg (17/10) -- Japanese shares rose, with the Topix index climbing to a three-week high, after the yen weakened as U.S. lawmakers reached a tentative deal to end the government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling.

The Topix gained 1.2 percent to 1,210.66 as of 9:02 a.m. in Tokyo, with all 33 subsectors climbing. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average added 1.3 percent to 14,653.76. The yen fell against all 16 of its major peers and traded at 98.91 per dollar.

Futures on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index gained 0.1 percent. The measure yesterday added 1.4 percent as the bipartisan leaders of the Senate reached an agreement to end the fiscal impasse and increase U.S. borrowing authority. The Senate is currently voting on the deal, while the House plans to do so later today. The White House press secretary said it has President Barack Obama’s support. House Speaker John Boehner said Republicans won’t block the Senate compromise.

With no deal, the U.S. would exhaust its borrowing authority today and the government may start missing payments at some point between Oct. 22 and Oct. 31, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Fitch Ratings put the world’s biggest economy on watch for a possible credit downgrade yesterday, citing lawmakers’ inability to agree.

Dollar, Euro Climb to 3-Week Highs Versus Yen on U.S. Debt Deal

Kontak Perkasa - Bloomberg (17/10) -- The dollar and euro climbed to a three-week high versus the yen as the Senate voted in favor of a deal to end a U.S. government shutdown and raise the debt limit, damping demand for haven assets.

The yen dropped versus major peers as Asian stocks rose. The greenback maintained yesterday losses versus higher-yielding currencies such as New Zealand’s with markets gauging the impact of the recent impasse on economic growth and prospects for the Federal Reserve to taper stimulus. Policy makers including Fed Bank of New York President William Dudley speak today. Australia’s dollar reached a four-month high before a Chinese report tomorrow forecast to show growth accelerated.

“The yen is going to be under a little bit of pressure,” said Emma Lawson, the Sydney-based senior currency strategist at National Australia Bank Ltd. “There is still some uncertainty because the deal is effectively just kicking the problem down the road.”

The dollar gained 0.1 percent to 98.89 yen as of 9:10 a.m. in Tokyo and touched 99.01, the most since Sept. 27. It rose 0.1 percent to $1.3523 per euro. Europe’s common currency was little changed at 133.70 yen after touching 133.84, the strongest level since Sept. 26.

New Zealand’s currency was little changed at 84.24 cents following yesterday’s 0.5 percent advance.

The Senate voted 81-18 to halt the 16-day shutdown and raise the borrowing limit. The House of Representatives plans to vote next and President Barack Obama supports the agreement.

Tokyo Share Up 0.18% by close

Written By PT Kontak perkasa Futures Yogyakarta on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 | 3:09 PM

Kontak Perkasa - AFP (16/10)-- Tokyo shares rose 0.18 percent by the close Wednesday as investors closely monitored Washington's budget deadlock ahead of a crucial deadline for raising the debt ceiling.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index shrugged off earlier losses to add 25.60 points to 14,467.14, while the Topix index of all first-section shares ended flat, slipping 0.06 percent, or 0.69 points, to 1,196.78.

The Nikkei see-sawed in and out of positive territory for much of the day with early gains driven by hopes for some sort of resolution after intense partisan bickering in the United States.

But the latest efforts to end the two-week US budget impasse fell apart late Tuesday.
The Republican leadership failed to muster enough support for its own plans to avert default, with just over a day to raise the debt ceiling by the October 17 deadline.

Fitch ratings agency said it may downgrade Washington's AAA credit rating. And the US Treasury has warned that if Congress does not lift the $17.6 trillion debt ceiling by Thursday, it will lose its ability to borrow and could run out of cash to pay all its obligations.

'It is hard to take any positions until the debt issue is resolved,' Daiwa Securities chief strategist Junya Naruse told Dow Jones Newswires.

The Tokyo market won some support from a stronger dollar which bought 98.50 yen in Tokyo afternoon trade, up from 98.16 yen in New York Tuesday afternoon. A weakening yen is seen as positive for Japanese exporters.

SoftBank added 2.20 percent to 7,400 yen, one day after the mobile carrier and Japan's GungHo Entertainment spent $1.5 billion on buying 51 percent of Finnish game firm Supercell, maker of the blockbuster online strategy game 'Clash of Clans'.

A report Wednesday said SoftBank was also in the final stages of talks to buy a majority stake in wireless device distributor Brightstar for more than 100 billion yen.

In response, SoftBank said the matter is 'under discussion' but that 'nothing has been decided at this point'.
Japan Tobacco fell 1.98 percent to 3,450 yen after the mass-selling Yomiuri Shimbun reported the company may hike cigarette prices by as much as 20 yen a pack, a move likely to weigh on consumer demand.

Copier maker Canon slipped 0.16 percent to 3,110 yen, Takeda Pharmaceuticals was up 0.42 percent to 4,705 yen, while cosmetics giant Shiseido rose 1.15 percent to 1,746 yen.

European Stocks Drop as U.S. Nears Debt-Ceiling Deadline

Kontak Perkasa - Bloomberg (16/10) --  European stocks declined from their highest level in almost four weeks as U.S. lawmakers continued to discuss raising the federal government’s debt limit. U.S. index futures gained, while Asian shares fluctuated.

Danone slid 4.4 percent after posting the slowest sales growth in 16 quarters and lowering its full-year forecast. LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA dropped 5.6 percent as the world’s largest luxury-goods company reported revenue for the third quarter that fell short of estimates.

The Stoxx 600 retreated 0.4 percent to 313.48 at 8:06 a.m. in London after yesterday rising to its highest level since Sept. 19. Standard & Poor’s 500 Index futures gained 0.3 percent, while the MSCI Asia Pacific Index slipped 0.1 percent.

“The deadline is looming and still no deal to resolve the U.S. fiscal deadlock,” Ian Williams, a market strategist at Peel Hunt LLP in London, wrote in a note to clients. “Markets are growing jumpy again, not helped by Fitch placing its U.S. credit rating on negative watch.”

House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, a Republican, made a last-minute attempt to influence the outcome of the fiscal showdown with a proposal that would extend government funding through Dec. 15, rather than Jan. 15 as the Senate plans. With the U.S. borrowing authority due to lapse tomorrow, Fitch Ratings put the world’s biggest economy on watch for a possible credit downgrade, citing lawmakers’ inability to reach a deal.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell have restarted negotiations to find a solution that would reopen the government and prevent a default.

“Senator Reid and Senator McConnell have re-engaged in negotiations and are optimistic that an agreement is within reach,” a spokesman for Reid said in a statement. They had suspended their talks, while they waited for the House to act on Boehner’s plan.

Gold Drops as Last-Minute Deal Is Seen Ending U.S. Debt Wrangle

Kontak Perkasa - Bloomberg (16/10) --  Gold fell for the first time in three days amid expectations that U.S. lawmakers will reach an agreement to lift the debt ceiling before the government’s borrowing authority lapses tomorrow.

Bullion for immediate delivery lost as much as 0.6 percent to $1,274.51 an ounce and was at $1,279.84 at 11:37 a.m. in Singapore. Prices dropped to $1,251.85 yesterday, the lowest level since July 10, before closing 0.8 percent higher as the negotiations stalled. Gold for December traded 0.5 percent higher at $1,279 an ounce on the Comex in New York.

Senate leaders resumed talks aimed at avoiding a default and ending the government shutdown after the House of Representatives scrapped a vote on a plan that would have kept the government open through Dec. 15 and suspended the debt limit until Feb. 7, 2014. Fitch Ratings put the U.S. on watch for a possible credit downgrade, citing lawmakers’ inability to forge a deal even as it expects the debt ceiling to be raised.

“History suggests that politicians will pull back from the abyss,” Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney, wrote in an e-mailed note today. “Investors appear content to take a wait-and-see attitude to this situation.”

The U.S. will begin missing promised payments between Oct. 22 and Oct. 31, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The government shutdown, which began Oct. 1, may have already hurt the recovery. Data yesterday showed the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s general economic index fell to a five-month low in October. Gold lost 24 percent this year, set for the first annual drop since 2000, on speculation the Fed will slow its $85 billion-a-month of debt buying as the economy improves.

Spot silver lost as much as 1 percent to $21.1567 an ounce and last traded at $21.285. Prices dropped to $20.5088 yesterday, the lowest since Aug. 9, before rallying 0.5 percent.

Platinum rose and fell at least 0.3 percent, before trading little changed at $1,386.15 an ounce. Palladium fluctuated between gains and losses, and traded little changed at $707.75 an ounce.

China Stock-Index Futures Fall Amid JPMorgan Cut, U.S. Talks

Kontak Perkasa - Bloomberg (16/10) --  China’s stock-index futures fell after JPMorgan Chase & Co. downgraded Chinese equities to underweight.

Futures on the CSI 300 Index (SHSZ300) expiring in October slipped 0.1 percent to 2,456 as of 9:21 a.m. local time. Inner Mongolia Yili Industrial Group Co., a milk producer, may be active after China tightened regulations on imported baby formula. Kweichow Moutai Co. may rise after third-quarter net income increased.

The Shanghai Composite Index (SHCOMP) slipped 0.2 percent to 2,233.41 yesterday, while the CSI 300 Index fell 0.2 percent to 2,467.52. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index gained 0.9 percent as Hong Kong’s markets re-opened after a holiday. The Bloomberg China-US Equity Index fell 0.7 percent.

The Shanghai Composite has climbed 15 percent from its four-year low on June 27, boosted by speculation the city’s free-trade zone will attract foreign companies and allow for financial liberalization.

The Shanghai Equity Exchange called a report from Shanghai Great Wisdom’s AAStocks.com that the exchange was studying an international stock board at the free-trade zone a “serious misrepresentation of the truth,” according to a statement on the bourse’s website today.

The Shanghai index trades at 8.8 times projected earnings for the next 12 months, compared with the five-year average of 12.6, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Trading volumes in the stocks measure were 0.2 percent below the 30-day average yesterday.

The government is scheduled to publish third-quarter gross domestic product data on Oct. 18. The economy probably expanded 7.8 percent from a year earlier, according to a Bloomberg survey, up from the second quarter’s 7.5 percent pace.

Dollar Gains Versus Yen as Senate Restarts Talks on Debt Impasse

Kontak Perkasa - Bloomberg (16/10) --  The dollar rose versus the yen for the first time in three days after Senate leaders resumed talks to avoid a U.S. default and reopen the government, damping demand for Japan’s haven assets.

The yen dropped against all major peers as Standard & Poor’s 500 Index futures and Asian stocks gained with the Senate discussions representing the clearest path to a deal. Any agreement would need to clear hurdles including persuading House Speaker John Boehner to allow a vote. New Zealand’s currency rose for a fourth day as faster-than-expected inflation boosted chances the central bank will raise its key interest rate.

“The way the market is trading is, small selloffs on bad news and big rallies on positive news,” said Sean Callow, a senior currency strategist at Westpac Banking Corp. in Sydney. “I’d want to know whether Boehner will present any bill agreed on in the Senate for a vote in the House. That’s what we really need for a real relief rally.”

The dollar rose 0.4 percent to 98.52 yen as of 9:42 a.m. in Tokyo after a 0.4 percent slide in the previous two days. It was little changed at $1.3511 per euro after climbing 0.3 percent yesterday. New Zealand’s currency rose 0.1 percent to 83.93 U.S. cents. The euro gained 0.3 percent to 133.11 yen.

The Bloomberg U.S. Dollar Index, which tracks the performance of the greenback against 10 major peers, was little changed at 1,012.92.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican, had suspended talks earlier while the House considered its own bill. They must now reach a final agreement, get all 100 senators to permit an expedited vote and persuade Boehner to allow a vote in the House that would pass largely with Democratic support.

The Treasury Department will have about $30 billion on hand after Oct. 17. Depending upon daily tax receipts and incoming bills, the U.S. government could be forced to default on its obligations at any date thereafter -- to bondholders and millions of Social Security recipients.

Tokyo Stock Up 0.18% by Break

Written By PT Kontak perkasa Futures Yogyakarta on Thursday, October 10, 2013 | 11:09 AM

Kontak Perkasa - AFP (10/10) -- Tokyo stocks rose 0.81 percent Thursday morning as the yen weakened and the White House moved to convene meetings with leading members of Congress to end a budget stand-off.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index climbed 113.14 points to 14, 150.98 by the break, while the Topix index of all first-section shares was up 0.75 percent, or 8.72 points, at 1,175.62.

President Barack Obama on Wednesday invited Republican and Democratic lawmakers to the White House to try to work through budget disagreements that have resulted in the partial shutdown of the government.

The impasse threatens to cause a debt default if the two sides fail to raise the borrowing limit by and October 17 deadline.

On currency markets, the dollar was supported by Obama's formal nomination of fiscal dove Janet Yellen to become the next head of the Federal Reserve.

The dollar rose to 97.62 yen from 97.37 yen in New York Wednesday.

A weaker yen tends to lift the Japanese stock market as it helps boost profitability among the country's major exporters.

Data Thursday showed Japanese machinery orders -- a key indicator of corporate capital spending -- rose 5.4 percent on-month in August, beating expectations. Consumer confidence figures are due later Thursday.
On Wall Street the S&P 500 and Dow were slightly higher, but a sell-off in tech stocks sent the Nasdaq lower, following a two percent plunge on Tuesday.

Gold drops close to $1,300 on stronger dollar, stimulus worries

Kontak Perkasa - Reuters, (10/10), Singapore - Gold dropped close to $1,300 an ounce on Wednesday, as the dollar bounced from an eight-month low and on signs the Federal Reserve may trim its stimulus measures this year.

Spot gold had fallen 0.24 percent to $1,303.44 an ounce by 0014 GMT, after losing around 1 percent the session before.

The Fed's shock decision last month not to reduce its support for the U.S. economy was a 'relatively close call' for policymakers, according to minutes of the meeting that also showed there was still broad support to trim bond-buying this year.

Bullion's safe-haven appeal dimmed as President Barack Obama launched a series of White House meetings with lawmakers on Wednesday to search for a way to end a government shutdown and raise the debt limit.

Gold sales under the Central Bank Gold Agreement in the year to Sept. 26 were the lowest of any year since the first version of the pact came into force in 1999, data from the World Gold Council showed.
Domestic gold traders in India, struggling for supplies in the peak festival season, may start getting the metal in the next two weeks under a new import rule, where exporters get a priority on shipments, officials at importing banks said.
